Shillong Hosts First International Film Festival, Announces Film City Plan


Shillong witnessed a landmark cultural moment as the first edition of the Shillong International Film Festival was officially inaugurated on Wednesday at the State Convention Centre. The event marks a significant step in promoting Meghalaya as an emerging hub for filmmaking and creative industries in the Northeast.

Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced that the state government is planning to establish a film city along with a film institute. He stated that the Cabinet has already approved the proposal for the film city, and a suitable location has been identified.

The Chief Minister emphasized that the initiative aims to build a strong ecosystem to attract filmmakers and position Meghalaya as a preferred destination for film production. He highlighted the state’s commitment to nurturing local talent by providing technical training and professional support in key areas such as cinematography, sound, lighting, and other behind-the-scenes roles.

He further described the film festival as part of a broader vision to develop a sustainable creative economy in the state, generating new opportunities and strengthening the region’s presence in the national and international film landscape.
