Scrutiny Clears 776 Candidates for Assam Assembly Polls; Decision Pending in Two Seats

The scrutiny of nomination papers for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections has cleared 776 candidates as valid, election officials said on Tuesday. The process was completed in 124 constituencies, while scrutiny in two seats — Barpeta (SC) and Dhekiajuli — has been deferred until March 25.

According to an official statement, a total of 815 candidates had filed 1,389 sets of nomination papers for the polls, which are scheduled to be held on April 9.

Among those whose nominations are yet to be cleared is Assam Cabinet minister Ashok Singhal, who is seeking re-election from Dhekiajuli on a Bharatiya Janata Party ticket. Congress candidates from both Barpeta and Dhekiajuli are also awaiting the outcome of the scrutiny process.

The last date for withdrawal of candidature is Thursday, with the deadline set at 3 pm. The final list of contestants will be confirmed after the completion of scrutiny in the remaining constituencies and the withdrawal process.
