Govt pushes for dairy self-reliance as milk demand outpaces supply
Mar 21, 2026
Milk production in the state has been steadily increasing, said Animal Resources Development Minister Sudhangshu Das on Friday. The state government has undertaken multiple initiatives aimed at achieving self-sufficiency in milk production.
The minister shared this information in a written reply in the State Legislative Assembly to questions raised by MLAs Nirmal Biswas and Sudip Roy Barman.
As per official data, milk production in the state stood at 230,115 metric tonnes in 2022-23. This increased to 247,305 metric tonnes in 2023-24 and further rose to 263,690 metric tonnes in the 2024-25 financial year. However, the current demand for milk in the state is estimated at 303,480 metric tonnes.
The minister informed that to bridge this gap and achieve self-reliance, the department has implemented several schemes. These include artificial insemination programs, animal feed and nutrition development initiatives, training for artificial insemination workers, establishment of “Gokul Gram,” distribution of crossbred milch calves, and incentives to boost milk production.
The minister highlighted that under the Chief Minister’s Advanced Livestock Scheme, sex-sorted semen is being used in artificial insemination to produce more female calves and enhance milk output. The use of improved breeds is also contributing to genetic improvement in livestock, thereby increasing productivity.
