India Keeps Indus Waters Treaty in Abeyance over Terror Concerns
Mar 20, 2026
India has reiterated that the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan will remain in abeyance until Islamabad takes concrete steps to end its support for terrorism. The statement was made by P. Harish, India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, during an event marking World Water Day.
Harish said Pakistan must uphold the sanctity of human life before raising concerns about the Indus Waters Treaty, adding that India had signed the agreement in 1960 in good faith. He alleged that Pakistan had undermined the treaty’s spirit through wars and continued terror attacks.
India suspended the treaty following last year’s deadly attack in Pahalgam. Harish also stated that India had attempted to engage Pakistan in discussions to modify the treaty in view of evolving technological and environmental challenges, but these efforts were rejected.
Reaffirming India’s commitment to water access, he highlighted progress under the Jal Jeevan Mission, which aims to expand safe drinking water coverage across the country.
