Assam CM Sarma Targets Congress, Woos ‘Good Leaders’ to BJP
Mar 19, 2026
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday intensified his attack on the Indian National Congress, claiming that leaders with “self-respect” would not remain in the party and reiterating his push to bring capable Congress figures into the Bharatiya Janata Party fold.
Speaking at an event in New Delhi, where former Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi formally joined the BJP, Sarma said there was “no conducive atmosphere” left in the Congress for individuals with independent thinking.
The Assam Chief Minister asserted that many Congress leaders were disillusioned with the party’s internal functioning and indicated that the BJP would continue efforts to induct “good leaders,” particularly from Assam, to strengthen its base in the region.
Sarma, who himself switched from Congress to the BJP in 2015, has been vocal in criticising his former party and positioning the BJP as a more dynamic political platform. His remarks are seen as part of a broader strategy to expand the BJP’s influence in the Northeast by attracting experienced opposition leaders.
