FM presents Rs 34,212 Cr budget for 2026–27; focus on health and digital infrastructure

The state finance minister Pranajit Singha Roy on Monday presented the budget of Rs. 34,212.31 crore for the financial year of 2026-27 marking an increase of 5.52 percent compared to the previous financial year and outlined major allocations for health, rural development, education, and digital infrastructure.
The government has also proposed a supplementary grant of Rs. 4,676.81 crore. Capital expenditure has been projected at Rs. 8,945.92 crore in the Budget Estimates (BE) for 2026-27, reflecting a 13.19 percent increase over BE 2025–26. The Finance Minister also announced that no new taxes have been proposed in this year’s budget.
Among the major sectoral allocations, the health sector has been allocated Rs. 2,441.50 crore, an increase of 25.29 percent over the previous budget estimate. The rural development sector will receive Rs. 4,094.57 crore, marking a 17.50 percent increase. The agriculture and allied sector has been allocated Rs. 1,985.61 crore, reflecting a 5.31 percent rise, while the education sector has been allocated Rs. 6,439.56 crore, an increase of 4.43 percent over BE 2025–26.
The budget also places strong emphasis on technology and digital infrastructure. The government has proposed the establishment of the Tripura IT & Data Ecosystem Zone (TIDEZ) at Chanmari in Agartala to attract investment in IT, IT-enabled services (ITeS), and data centres.
A new initiative titled “NAVCHETNA” will be introduced to promote technology-driven education through innovation and technology laboratories in educational institutions. The programme will introduce students to artificial intelligence, robotics, Internet of Things (IoT), coding, and automation.
The government also announced that an AVGC-XR (Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, Comics and Extended Reality) Policy will be introduced to promote the Orange Economy, aiming to position Tripura as a hub for creative technology, digital content, and immersive media while boosting innovation, skill development, and employment generation.
Another major proposal is the development of Agartala AI City, envisioned as a flagship digital infrastructure initiative featuring a state-of-the-art IT park to promote AI, IT/ITeS, startups, and innovation while generating large-scale employment opportunities.
To strengthen the state’s digital security ecosystem, a Cyber Security Operation Centre (CSOC) will also be established in Agartala.
In the field of medical education, the government has proposed the establishment of an Ayurvedic Medical College in Gomati district and a Homoeopathic Medical College at Netaji Subhas State Homeopathy Hospital in Agartala, each with 60 seats, starting from the next academic session. The budget also proposes the establishment of the Tripura University of Health Sciences.
Under technical education initiatives, a new Industrial Training Institute (ITI) will be constructed at Pecharthal. Additionally, a Drone School will be established to provide professional training for drone pilot operators with DGCA-approved licences.
The budget reflects the state government’s focus on strengthening healthcare, education, rural development, and technology-driven growth while promoting innovation and employment opportunities.
