Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday said that 12 illegal migrants from Bangladesh were pushed back across the international border as part of the state government’s ongoing drive against illegal migration.
In a post on social media platform X, the Chief Minister said the operation was carried out in the early hours of the day under the state’s “Mission Clean Up” initiative. According to him, authorities identified the individuals as illegal migrants and subsequently sent them back across the border.
“In the wee hours, 12 illegal migrants were identified and pushed back to where they belong. Mission Clean Up continues,” Sarma wrote.
However, the Chief Minister did not disclose the district where the individuals were detained or the specific sector of the India-Bangladesh border through which they were pushed back.
Reiterating his government’s firm stance on the issue, Sarma said Assam would not tolerate the presence of illegal migrants in the state. “I have said time and again — Assam will not spare a single illegal migrant. Each one of you will be sent back,” he added.
The Assam government has been carrying out regular operations to detect and deport individuals suspected of entering the state illegally from neighbouring Bangladesh.
