Large-scale mourning gatherings and protests were reported across several countries following the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, as Shia communities expressed grief and, in some places, anger.
In Tehran and other cities across Iran, millions were reported to have taken to the streets to mourn the Leader of the Islamic Republic. Massive crowds also gathered in Isfahan and Zanjan. In a symbolic gesture widely interpreted as a call for justice and retribution in Shia tradition, a red flag was raised over the dome of the Jamkaran Mosque, a site of major religious significance.
Outside Iran, solidarity gatherings were reported in several countries. In Baghdad, large numbers of people assembled in the streets to pay their respects.
In India, mourners gathered outside the Iran Cultural House in Delhi, where a meeting was scheduled to mark Khamenei’s passing. Members of the Shia community in Jammu and Kashmir staged a protest outside the headquarters of the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan in Srinagar.
In Pakistan, some demonstrations reportedly turned violent. Thousands gathered in Skardu, where a United Nations office was set on fire. In Karachi, protesters stormed the US consulate, leading to clashes with security forces. According to reports, at least 10 people were killed when soldiers opened fire on demonstrators outside the consulate.
