Northeast Can Emerge as Southeast Asia Trade Gateway: Union minister Dr Jitendra Singh
Feb 26, 2026
Emphasising the Northeast’s untapped economic potential, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science & Technology and several other key portfolios, Dr. Jitendra Singh, on Wednesday underscored the transformative role Tripura could play as a trade gateway to Southeast Asia.
Chairing a District-Level Review Meeting at the Conference Hall of the Collector Office in Kamalasagar, the Minister called upon district authorities to adopt a structured and commercially viable strategy for scaling up bamboo utilisation across the State.
Highlighting Tripura’s rich bamboo reserves, he noted that despite the abundance of the resource, its economic potential remains largely underexploited. Bamboo, he said, offers vast possibilities — from construction materials and interior décor to handicrafts, furniture, and jewellery. With proper value addition and market linkage, it can substantially strengthen Tripura’s trade footprint while generating sustainable livelihood opportunities for local communities.
Dr Singh further pointed to the strategic importance of regional connectivity. Referring to the rail link project connecting Tripura with Bangladesh, he recalled that groundwork for the initiative began during his tenure as Governor. Although the project has received approval, progress has slowed due to the prevailing situation in Bangladesh.
However, once operational, the direct rail service is expected to significantly reduce logistics costs and open new trade routes for Tripura and the wider Northeast.
“The Northeast has the potential to emerge as a dynamic Southeast Asia trade corridor,” he said, stressing that improved cross-border connectivity would accelerate business exchanges and regional development.
Earlier in the meeting, the District Administration presented a comprehensive review of development indicators and governance initiatives. Discussions covered progress under rural development schemes, infrastructure expansion, implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission, PMAY-G performance, institutional delivery rates, immunisation coverage, and advances in agriculture, horticulture, fisheries, and self-help group financing.
The review meeting concluded with directions to expedite priority projects and enhance coordination for sustainable district-level growth.
