Etcheverry Wins Maiden ATP Title in Rio

Tomas Martin Etcheverry claimed the first ATP Tour title of his career on Sunday, defeating Alejandro Tabilo in a thrilling three-set final at the Rio Open in Brazil.

The 26-year-old Argentine rallied from a set down to secure a 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-4 victory in the ATP 500 championship match. Etcheverry showed notable resilience, having been required to play both his semi-final and the final on the same day after rain delays disrupted the tournament schedule.

The triumph represents the most significant achievement of Etcheverry’s career to date. He had previously finished runner-up in three ATP Tour finals but broke through in Rio to capture his maiden crown. During the tournament, he also recorded his 100th career match win on the ATP Tour.

Etcheverry had beaten Tabilo the previous week in Buenos Aires and repeated the feat in Rio, improving his head-to-head record against the Chilean to 2-0. The victory lifted him 18 places in the ATP rankings to World No. 33, marking his return to the Top 40 for the first time since last February.

In the men’s doubles final, Brazil’s Joao Fonseca and Felipe Melo defeated Germany’s Constantin Frantzen and the Netherlands’ Robin Haase 4-6, 6-3, 10-8. The win marked Fonseca’s first title on home soil and Melo’s second consecutive doubles trophy.
