India–Bangladesh Ties Show Signs of Revival after New Government Takes Office in Dhaka

Bilateral relations between India and Bangladesh appear to be returning to normalcy following the oath-taking ceremony of Bangladesh’s new Prime Minister, Tarique Rahman. The change in leadership in Dhaka has been followed by a series of positive developments, signalling renewed cooperation between the two neighbouring countries.

Within days of the swearing-in ceremony, a trial run of the long-suspended India–Bangladesh bus service was successfully completed. The bus services, which had remained halted for an extended period due to diplomatic and administrative issues, are now expected to resume fully, improving connectivity and strengthening people-to-people contact.

Visa services between the two countries have also returned to normal operations. Both Indian and Bangladeshi authorities have restored regular processing of visas, providing relief to travellers, students, patients and businesspersons who were affected by earlier disruptions. The normalization of visa services is being viewed as a significant step toward rebuilding trust and facilitating smoother cross-border movement.

Attention is now turning toward major connectivity and infrastructure projects that could further deepen bilateral cooperation. Among them is the much-awaited opening and operational expansion of Maitri Setu, the India–Bangladesh Friendship Bridge over the Feni River. The bridge connects Tripura in India with Bangladesh’s road network and is expected to significantly boost trade and improve access for India’s northeastern states to Bangladeshi ports.

In addition, Nischintapur Railway Station, located near Agartala in Tripura, is emerging as a key international railway hub. Designed to strengthen rail connectivity between India and Bangladesh, the station is part of broader efforts to enhance cross-border transport infrastructure. Once fully operational, it is expected to facilitate both passenger and freight movement, further supporting economic cooperation.

The renewed diplomatic engagement, restoration of transport services, and progress in infrastructure projects have generated optimism among citizens of both nations. Observers believe that sustained cooperation under the new leadership could usher in a stronger phase of partnership between India and Bangladesh, built on connectivity, trade and shared regional interests.
