Stressing the importance of preserving India’s linguistic heritage, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday urged parents to communicate with their children in their respective mother tongues at home. He said that native languages form the bedrock of cultural identity and play a vital role in strengthening national unity.
Shah was speaking at the Rajbhasha Sammelan held at the International Indoor Exhibition Centre in Hapania, Agartala. The event brought together public representatives, scholars, and officials to deliberate on the promotion and development of Indian languages.
Highlighting the emotional and cultural value of language, Shah said that a mother tongue is not merely a means of communication but a reflection of tradition, heritage, and values passed down generations. He called on families to ensure that children grow up fluent in their native languages, stating that early exposure at home fosters deeper cultural connections and stronger family bonds.
“India’s linguistic diversity is our strength. Language should never be a reason for conflict,” he remarked, adding that every Indian must take pride in their mother tongue while respecting others.
Among those present at the programme were Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, Lok Sabha MPs Biplab Kumar Deb and Kriti Devi Debbarman, and Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharjee, along with other dignitaries.
The Home Minister also underlined the Centre’s commitment to promoting Indian languages through administrative reforms, educational policies, and digital initiatives. He noted that the increased use of Hindi and regional languages in governance is aimed at making administration more accessible and inclusive.
Addressing recurring debates over language and script, Shah emphasized that such matters should not be politicized. He reiterated that the Constitution recognizes and respects India’s vast linguistic diversity, and there is no intention to impose any language on any region.
The Sammelan featured discussions on leveraging technology for translation, expanding the use of official languages in government work, and ensuring that citizens can access services in their preferred languages.
Concluding his address, Shah reaffirmed that linguistic harmony is central to India’s unity and progress. He encouraged citizens to celebrate their linguistic roots while embracing the country’s multilingual character.
