Shillong Agglomerate Carve-Out Proposal Under Review

Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Wednesday said that the proposal to carve out the Shillong Agglomerate from the East Khasi Hills district will be examined in detail to ensure better governance and improved public service delivery.

Replying to a short-duration discussion raised by Paul Lyngdoh in the Assembly, the Chief Minister acknowledged that Shillong, as the state capital, has witnessed rapid urban expansion over the years. He noted that the city’s growth has placed mounting pressure on civic administration, infrastructure, law enforcement, and essential public services.

Mr. Sangma said the proposal warrants careful deliberation and stressed that no decision would be taken without thorough scrutiny. He informed the House that a high-level committee, headed by the Chief Secretary, would examine all aspects of the proposal before arriving at a final decision.

The government, he added, remains committed to strengthening governance mechanisms to ensure more efficient and citizen-centric administration in the rapidly growing urban agglomeration.
