Hindi Implementation in Focus: Amit Shah to Inaugurate Regional Language Conference in Agartala

The Department of Official Language under the Ministry of Home Affairs will host the Joint Regional Official Language Conference of the Eastern, North-Eastern and Northern Regions on February 20 at the International Fair Ground, Hapania, in Agartala.

The conference will be inaugurated at 2:00 PM by Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah. Senior officials from central government offices, public sector undertakings and banks across 17 states and Union Territories are expected to attend.

Addressing a press briefing at Sonar Tori State Guest House on Thursday, Department Secretary Anshuli Arya outlined the objectives of the conference. She noted that Hindi, written in the Devanagari script, holds constitutional status as the official language of the Union. The Department of Official Language has been working since 1975 to promote its progressive use in official communication and administration.

The conference will bring together representatives from the Eastern Region (West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar and Jharkhand), the North-Eastern Region (Assam, Tripura, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim), and the Northern Region (Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh). Discussions will focus on reviewing the implementation of the Official Language policy, sharing best practices and strengthening coordination among departments.

During the programme, 80 Regional Official Language Awards for the year 2024–25 will be presented to offices, banks and public sector undertakings for outstanding performance in implementing the Official Language policy. Selected Town Official Language Implementation Committees will also be honoured with the ‘Nagar Rajbhasha Samman’ in recognition of their notable efforts in promoting the use of Hindi in official work.

The conference is expected to serve as a key platform for evaluating progress and reinforcing the Centre’s commitment to the effective use of Hindi in governance across regions.
