IAF Intensifies Aerial Operations to Contain Dzükou Valley Fire
Feb 18, 2026
Helicopters of the Indian Air Force continue relentless aerial firefighting operations in Dzükou Valley after a massive forest fire broke out on January 26, severely damaging large portions of the scenic landscape.
According to the Kohima District Administration, the southern, eastern and western ranges of the valley have largely been burnt, with only residual smoke lingering in a few pockets. Authorities said the steep terrain and absence of motorable access to critical areas have made ground-based firefighting operations extremely challenging.
Personnel of the Indian Army are assisting in efforts on the ground, navigating difficult slopes and inaccessible stretches to prevent the fire from spreading further.
To strengthen containment measures, the IAF has deployed Mi-17 V5 helicopters equipped with Bambi Buckets to conduct aerial water-dousing missions. The helicopters have been carrying out continuous sorties under demanding conditions, including steep gradients, poor visibility and rarefied air, in a bid to bring the blaze under control and protect the remaining stretches of the valley in Nagaland.
