India to Send Delegation to US to Finalise Interim Trade Pact

A team of Indian officials will travel to the United States next week to finalise the legal text of an interim trade agreement between the two countries, Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal said on Monday.

Addressing the media in New Delhi, Mr. Agrawal stated that the visit is likely to commence on 23rd February. The Indian delegation will be led by the country’s chief negotiator, Darpan Jain.

Earlier this month, India and the United States issued a joint statement announcing that the framework for an interim trade agreement had been finalised. Mr. Agrawal noted that while the joint statement laid down the broad contours of the deal, the next step is to translate those provisions into a legally binding text.

The interim trade agreement is expected to be signed within the next month following the completion of the legal drafting process.
