Amit Shah Launches CBDC-Based Public Distribution System in Gujarat
Feb 15, 2026
Amit Shah on Sunday launched the country’s first Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC)-based Public Distribution System (PDS) at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar, describing it as a major step toward ensuring transparency and efficiency in welfare delivery.
Addressing the gathering, Shah reaffirmed the commitment of the government led by Narendra Modi to safeguard the interests of farmers, cattle rearers and fishermen in all international trade agreements. He dismissed opposition concerns, asserting that agricultural stakeholders’ interests have been protected in both the India–US trade deal and the India–EU Free Trade Agreement.
The newly launched system will provide beneficiaries with digital wallet tokens containing details such as the name of the item, quantity and price. According to the minister, the CBDC-based mechanism is expected to eliminate corruption and leakages in the Public Distribution System while bringing greater transparency to the delivery process.
Highlighting the government’s pro-poor initiatives over the past decade, Shah said that around 27 crore people have moved above the poverty line as a result of sustained welfare measures.
The initiative marks a significant move toward integrating digital currency technology into India’s public welfare infrastructure.
