India Retail Inflation at 2.75% in January after CPI Revision
Feb 14, 2026
India’s retail inflation stood at 2.75 per cent in January 2026 on an annual basis under the newly revised Consumer Price Index (CPI) series, according to data released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.
The January reading marks the first major revision of the CPI in over a decade, with the base year updated from 2012 to 2024. Under the previous series, retail inflation was recorded at 1.33 per cent in December last year. Despite the rise, inflation remains within the tolerance band set by the Reserve Bank of India.
Inflation in rural areas edged up to 2.73 per cent, while urban inflation rose slightly higher to 2.77 per cent. Meanwhile, food inflation, measured by the All India Consumer Food Price Index, recorded 2.13 per cent in January, compared with a deflation of 2.7 per cent in December.
A notable feature of the revised CPI series is the reduced weight of food items in the overall index, lowering their influence on headline inflation.
The ministry attributed the increase in headline and food inflation in January mainly to rising prices of personal care items, social protection services, education services, clothing and footwear, restaurants and accommodation services, and tobacco.
