Social Welfare and Social Education Minister Tinku Roy on Thursday described child marriage as a “social curse” and pledged to completely eradicate the practice from Tripura. He made the statement during the inauguration of a state-level awareness program aimed at promoting a child marriage-free India and preventing gender-based violence, held at a private hotel in Agartala.
Minister Roy emphasized that child marriage not only deprives children, especially girls, of their education and health but also perpetuates cycles of social inequality and gender-based violence. “Creating a safe, healthy, and gender-equal society requires collective awareness, education, and social responsibility,” he said, adding that the government is committed to reducing child marriage cases to zero in the state.
The program, organized by the Department of Social Welfare and Social Education, was attended by key officials including Jharna Debbarma, Chairperson of the Women’s Commission; Jayanti Debbarma, Chairperson of the Child Protection Commission; and Tapan Kumar Das, Director of Social Welfare and Social Education. The event focused on sensitizing communities about the legal, social, and health implications of child marriage and gender-based violence, and encouraged community participation in safeguarding children’s rights.
Minister Roy further urged civil society, educators, and local leaders to actively participate in the campaign, emphasizing that a collective effort is essential to ensure a safe and dignified future for the next generation.
