Feb 12, 2026
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Wednesday announced a 70 per cent subsidy scheme to promote homestays in preparation for the National Games 2027. The announcement was made during the land handover ceremony for the proposed five-star Holiday Inn Resort at Hotel Polo Orchid in Tura, organised by the Department of Tourism.
Under the scheme, beneficiaries will receive 70 per cent financial support to establish homestays that will function as sports hostels during the Games. After the event, the owners will continue to operate them as private enterprises. Describing the initiative as an innovative approach, the Chief Minister said it would help address accommodation requirements during the Games while generating entrepreneurship and sustainable livelihoods for local communities.
Sangma emphasised the need to cater to all categories of tourists through a balanced model that includes premium hotels as well as community-based homestays. He noted that strengthening tourism infrastructure is central to the state’s broader economic strategy.
Highlighting ongoing and upcoming infrastructure initiatives, the Chief Minister referred to the expansion of the Shillong runway, the ₹50-crore state-funded repair and revival of Tura Airport with expected UDAN operations, heliport development, an upcoming IT park, a medical college, an additional secretariat and urban beautification projects.
He described the proposed ₹130-crore Holiday Inn Resort as a significant milestone for the Garo Hills region, stating that the investment aligns with the government’s vision of transforming Meghalaya into a $10 billion economy through strategic development of tourism and allied sectors. Sangma also articulated a long-term goal of turning Meghalaya into a $150 billion economy by 2047.
