Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Wednesday inaugurated the first-ever skatepark in the Garo Hills at Government College, Tura. The facility has been developed under the Sports Infrastructure Development Project through a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative by Decathlon.
Speaking at the inauguration, the Chief Minister expressed satisfaction over the successful completion of the project and extended his gratitude to Decathlon, the authorities of Government College, and local stakeholders for their collective efforts. He said that seeing the happiness and excitement of young skaters enjoying the new facility gave him greater joy than the ceremony itself.
Mr. Sangma emphasized the need to create constructive avenues for young people, stating that it is the responsibility of society to provide spaces and opportunities for youth to pursue their passions. He highlighted the growing demand for skateboarding infrastructure across Meghalaya and the Northeast and expressed hope that Tura would emerge as a hub for skateboarding activities.
The Chief Minister also announced plans to organise local and state-level skateboarding tournaments, with the possibility of hosting national-level competitions in the future, providing a platform for young athletes to showcase their talent.
