Assam CM Orders SIT Probe into Alleged Anti-India Conspiracy
Feb 08, 2026
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday announced the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate an alleged anti-India conspiracy, and said the matter would be referred to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) for further action.
Addressing a press conference in Guwahati, the Chief Minister said the investigation was being pursued purely from the perspective of national security, with no political considerations involved. He stated that the state government had decided to involve central agencies due to the seriousness of the allegations.
According to Mr. Sarma, the alleged conspiracy involves a Pakistani national acting in connivance with a British citizen, identified as the wife of Congress MP and Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi, as well as Mr. Gogoi himself. An SIT has been constituted by the state government to conduct a preliminary inquiry before the case is handed over to the Centre.
Reacting to the allegations, Mr. Gogoi, who is also the Deputy Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha, rejected the claims and termed the Chief Minister’s press conference a “flop show,” alleging that the charges were politically motivated.
