PM Modi Reaffirms Zero-Tolerance Stand on Terrorism during Malaysia visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on today held wide-ranging talks with his Malaysian counterpart Anwar Ibrahim in Kuala Lumpur, with a focus on strengthening defence, security, and economic cooperation between the two countries. Reiterating India’s firm position on terrorism, Mr Modi said there would be “no double standards and no compromise” in dealing with the menace.
During the visit, India and Malaysia exchanged several agreements and documents covering cooperation in disaster management, audiovisual co-production, combating corruption, semiconductor development, health and medicine, scholarships, and digital payments. An agreement was also signed between NPCI International Payments Limited and Malaysia’s PAYNET to enhance cross-border digital transactions.
Prime Minister Modi said bilateral cooperation would expand in areas such as maritime security, defence, and counter-terrorism. He noted that ties are also deepening across energy, infrastructure, manufacturing, and the digital economy. Highlighting the close people-to-people links, he described India and Malaysia as maritime neighbours connected by a strong Indian diaspora.
The Prime Minister said the audiovisual co-production agreement would promote exchanges in film and music, particularly Tamil cinema. He also announced initiatives to enhance university exchanges, skill development, and start-up collaboration, including the establishment of the Thiruvalluvar Centre to promote academic research and studies.
Mr Modi also met business leaders to discuss investment opportunities across sectors, including semiconductors, and interacted with Phison Electronics Corporation Founder and CEO Pua Khein Seng on India’s semiconductor vision.
Earlier, the Prime Minister reaffirmed India’s commitment to ASEAN and congratulated Malaysia on assuming the chairmanship of the regional grouping. Both sides agreed to complete the review of the ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement (AITIGA) at the earliest. Emphasising the growing importance of the Indo-Pacific region, Mr Modi said India and Malaysia would continue working together for development, peace, and stability in the region.
