Major Power Outage Halts Kyiv Metro and Water Supply
Feb 01, 2026
A major technical malfunction in Ukraine’s power grid caused widespread outages yesterday, disrupting metro services and water supply in Kyiv. The blackout also affected parts of neighboring Moldova.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that two transmission lines between Romania and Moldova, as well as lines within Ukraine, stopped operating due to a technical incident. Authorities emphasized that there is currently no evidence of external interference or cyberattack.
Emergency crews worked to restore power across the country, while local authorities temporarily cut electricity in some regions to protect the grid. Kyiv’s metro and water services have resumed in most areas, though some disruptions remain.
Officials are investigating the cause of the malfunction, which may be linked to severe winter conditions affecting the energy network.
