Nagaland CM Launches Digitisation of Old Birth and Death Records
Feb 01, 2026
Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on Saturday launched the digitisation of old manual birth and death records in the state, marking a significant step towards improving public service delivery and data management.
The official launch was held in Kohima in the presence of Secretary to the Government of Nagaland Akunu S. Meyase, Director of Economics and Statistics Neidilhou Keditsu, and other departmental officials.
Speaking at the event, the Chief Minister said the initiative would streamline service delivery, ensure accurate and efficient record-keeping, enhance citizen access to essential documents, and support the government in informed public policy planning. He emphasised that timely registration of births and deaths is crucial for securing the legal identity of citizens and enabling access to services such as education, employment, Aadhaar, voter ID, and driving licences.
Mr. Rio commended the Department of Economics and Statistics for the initiative and urged citizens to promptly register births and deaths to ensure effective service delivery.
In line with directives from the Office of the Registrar General of India under the Ministry of Home Affairs, the department introduced online registration of births and deaths across Nagaland in April 2022. Earlier this month, it announced that the issuance of manual certificates would soon be discontinued, with a complete transition to 100 per cent online registration and digitisation of old records.
The department clarified that only genuine certificates issued by the Registrar of Births and Deaths and records available in official registers will be digitised. The move aims to reduce paperwork and provide faster, more reliable services to citizens.
