Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday launched development projects worth over ₹1,700 crore in Dibrugarh, Assam, including the foundation stone for the second complex of the Assam Legislative Assembly.
Addressing a public meeting, Mr Shah said the proposed India–European Union Free Trade Agreement would help boost Assam’s tea exports to European markets. He also highlighted measures taken by the Centre to mitigate floods in the state and urged people to support the BJP in the next Assembly elections for development, peace and security.
Criticising previous Congress governments, Mr Shah alleged that Assam was neglected for decades and that infiltration was used as a tool for vote-bank politics. He said that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, the Centre has brought major infrastructure projects to the state, transforming Assam from a region once associated with unrest to one identified with peace and development.
Calling the day historic, particularly for Upper Assam, Mr Shah said the second Legislative Assembly complex in Dibrugarh would strengthen the state’s administrative infrastructure. The ₹284-crore project includes a three-storey Assembly building, a nine-storey MLA hostel, an 800-seat auditorium and security barracks, and is part of efforts to develop Dibrugarh as the state’s second administrative hub.
The Home Minister also inaugurated the first phase of a modern multi-disciplinary sports complex costing ₹238 crore and laid the foundation stone for its second phase, estimated at ₹209 crore. In addition, he laid the foundation stone for a ₹292-crore Wildlife Health and Research Centre aimed at improving treatment and research facilities for wild animals.
Mr Shah further launched a ₹692-crore wetland restoration and rejuvenation project under the National Disaster Mitigation Fund to restore 15 wetlands across nine districts, with the aim of reducing urban flood risks and strengthening flood management in the Brahmaputra river basin.
The projects were unveiled in the presence of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and other dignitaries. Later in the day, Mr Shah travelled to Dhemaji district to attend the Takam Mising Porin Kebang Youth Festival and interact with BJP party workers.
