Elderly Hindu Man Killed in Land Dispute in Bangladesh

An elderly Hindu man was killed in Bangladesh’s Kurigram district on Monday following a long-running dispute over land boundaries, raising renewed concerns about the safety of religious minorities in the country.

The victim, Madhu Chandra Shil (62), died after being pushed during an altercation with neighbours in Joydeb Malsabari village under Rajarhat upazila, police said.

According to local authorities, Shil had been involved in a prolonged disagreement with the family of a neighbour, Abed Ali, over the demarcation of their land. During the confrontation, Shil was pushed to the ground and later succumbed to his injuries.

Police have arrested Ashraf Ali, identified as the main accused in the case, while efforts are ongoing to detain others allegedly involved. Rajarhat Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Abdul Wadud said a case was being prepared and assured that all those responsible would be brought to justice.

Rights activists and local residents said the killing should not be viewed in isolation, noting that land disputes involving Hindu families—often economically and politically vulnerable—frequently escalate into violence. They also alleged that such cases are often marked by delayed justice and inadequate protection for minority communities.

The incident has renewed criticism of law enforcement and administrative authorities for failing to intervene in time to prevent such disputes from turning deadly, particularly in areas where religious minorities remain at risk.
