Bangladesh Condemns Hasina’s Delhi Press Event, Calls It a Threat to Relations

Bangladesh has expressed strong shock and dismay after former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina addressed a press event in New Delhi on January 23. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the event, which featured Hasina’s audio messages shared by Awami League leaders, was a violation of diplomatic norms and “deeply aggrieving” to the country.

Hasina, who has been in India since fleeing Bangladesh in August 2024, has been convicted by the International Crimes Tribunal for crimes against humanity and sentenced to death. Dhaka criticized India for allowing her statements to be publicly broadcast, warning that it sets a “dangerous precedent” that could harm future Bangladesh–India relations and threaten the democratic process ahead of the February elections.
