Supreme Court Dismisses Plea Against BCCI Being Called India’s National Cricket Team

The Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed a petition seeking to restrain the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) from being projected as the representative body of the official national cricket team, terming the plea frivolous.

The petition had urged the court to direct public broadcaster Prasar Bharati, which operates Doordarshan and All India Radio, to refrain from referring to the BCCI-run team as the “Indian National Cricket Team” or “Team India.” The petitioner argued that such references were misleading and violated laws governing the use of national symbols.

A bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice Vipul Pancholi upheld the Delhi High Court’s October 8 order, which had dismissed the public interest litigation filed by advocate Reepak Kansal.

The apex court found no merit in the plea and agreed with the High Court’s view that the petition did not warrant judicial interference.
