Assam Cabinet names special prosecutors in Zubeen Garg case

The Assam Cabinet on Friday approved the appointment of a five-member team of special public prosecutors to represent the state in the case related to the alleged death of cultural icon Zubeen Garg.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said senior Gauhati High Court advocate Ziaul Kamar has been appointed as the Special Public Prosecutor. Brojendra Mohan Choudhury will serve as Additional Public Prosecutor, while Kishore Dutta, Pranjal Dutta and Bikash Jamar have been named Assistant Public Prosecutors.

The decision comes days after Garg’s wife, Garima, on February 3 raised concerns over the large legal team representing the accused and urged the state to ensure an equally strong prosecution.

The Cabinet also approved a grant of ₹5 crore for a trust to be set up by Garg’s family in his name. The chief minister said the government would extend further support once the family shares plans to preserve Garg’s legacy and works.
