UN Secretary-General Regrets US Withdrawal from Multiple UN Bodies

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed regret over the decision by the United States to withdraw from several United Nations entities.

Speaking on the matter, the UN Secretary-General’s spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, emphasized that under the UN Charter, member states are legally obligated to contribute to the organization’s budgets. He added that despite the US decision, UN entities will continue to carry out their mandates with determination, as assigned by member states.

The development follows a Presidential Memorandum signed by US President Donald Trump, directing the withdrawal of the United States from 66 international organizations and treaties, including 31 UN bodies. The move was justified by the US administration on the grounds of protecting national interests.

Among the UN entities affected by the US withdrawal are the Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the International Law Commission, the International Trade Centre, the Peacebuilding Commission, UN Energy, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and UN Water.

The decision has raised concerns within the international community about its potential impact on multilateral cooperation and the functioning of key UN programs.
