Assam Don Bosco University to Launch Northeast’s First Satellite LACHIT-1 on January 12

Assam Don Bosco University (ADBU) is set to create history with the launch of LACHIT-1, the first satellite developed from Assam and the Northeast region, on January 12 aboard ISRO’s PSLV-C62 launch vehicle.

The satellite will be launched under Hyderabad-based Dhruva Space’s Polar Access-1 (PA-1) programme, marking a significant milestone for academic participation in India’s growing space ecosystem. The mission highlights the increasing role of educational institutions in advanced space research and technology.

LACHIT-1, which stands for Live Amateur Communication Hub for Innovative Technologies – One, is a student-led initiative involving more than 50 students and faculty members from across the Northeast, including Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, and Manipur.

Named after the legendary Ahom general Lachit Borphukan, the satellite symbolises the region’s rich historical legacy while showcasing its emerging technological capabilities. The project has been developed under Dhruva Space’s ASTRA (Accelerated Space Technology Readiness & Access) for Academia programme and is built on the company’s flight-qualified P-DoT satellite platform.

The successful launch of LACHIT-1 is expected to inspire innovation and strengthen space research initiatives across the Northeast.
