Hindu Shopkeeper Killed in Bangladesh’s Narsingdi, Fourth Such Death in Weeks
Jan 06, 2026
A 40-year-old Hindu grocery shop owner was killed in a knife attack in Bangladesh’s Narsingdi district, heightening fear and anger amid a series of recent killings targeting members of the Hindu community.
The victim, Moni Chakraborty, was attacked late Monday night while returning home after closing his shop at Charsindhur Bazar in Palash Upazila. According to police and local residents, unidentified assailants struck him with a sharp, locally made weapon around 11 p.m. He was rushed to the Palash Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead.
Moni Chakraborty’s killing is the fourth such incident involving Hindus in recent weeks, raising concerns about public safety, minority protection, and law and order in the country.
Earlier this month, on January 5, Hindu businessman and journalist Rana Pratap, also known as Rana Kanti Bairagi, was shot dead at Kopalia Bazar in Jashore. On December 18, Dipu Chandra Das, a garment factory worker in Mymensingh, was beaten to death following allegations of blasphemy; his body was later tied to a tree and set on fire. On December 31, businessman Khokon Chandra Das was stabbed and set ablaze in Shariatpur, succumbing to his injuries three days later while undergoing treatment in Dhaka.
Human rights groups and members of minority communities have expressed alarm over the repeated attacks, accusing authorities of slow investigations and inadequate action. They warn that delays in arrests and weak enforcement are emboldening criminals and deepening fear among vulnerable communities.
