Congress Youth Leader Shahjahan Islam Arrested After Months in Hiding
Jan 05, 2026Police on Monday arrested Congress youth leader Shahjahan Islam after months of evasion in connection with an incident that took place in Agartala on June 8, 2025. He had reportedly been absconding since the incident, which had triggered tension in parts of the capital.
According to police, Shahjahan Islam is the prime accused in the case and allegedly made communally provocative remarks along with derogatory comments against the Chief Minister during the incident, leading to a volatile situation at the time.
After sustained surveillance and a prolonged manhunt, the accused was apprehended from an area under the Udaipur subdivision. Confirming the arrest, the Sadar Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) said that multiple cases were already pending against him.
Police also disclosed that a fresh case has been registered against Shahjahan Islam for allegedly using a forged signature while filing a bail petition in court on August 25, 2025. An investigation into the forgery allegation is currently underway.
The accused is presently in police custody and being interrogated. Investigators are examining whether others were involved and if there was any organized conspiracy behind the incident. Police said he will be produced before the court after completion of questioning.
