Tarique Rahman to Assume BNP Chairmanship After Khaleda Zia’s Death

Acting Chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Tarique Rahman, is set to take over the party’s full responsibilities following the death of BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia.

Party sources said that under the BNP constitution, Tarique Rahman has automatically assumed the duties of party chairman, although no formal announcement has yet been made.

The development comes ahead of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad election, scheduled for the 12th of next month. BNP leaders stressed the need for a swift resolution, particularly in relation to campaign materials. Under the election code of conduct, candidates are permitted to use only the photograph of the current party chief on banners, posters and leaflets.

BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed said the party would seek clarification from the Election Commission regarding the issue.

Khaleda Zia passed away on the 30th of last month after a prolonged illness, marking the end of a significant era in BNP leadership.
