Assam Govt to Transfer ₹2.9 Crore GST from Zubeen Garg’s Final Film to His Foundation

The Assam government will transfer ₹2.90 crore, the state’s share of Goods and Services Tax (GST) collected from Roi Roi Binale, the final film of late singer Zubeen Garg, to a foundation established by the artist, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Wednesday.

Speaking to the media during a New Year programme titled Natun Diner Alap (Conversations of a New Day), Sarma said the GST proceeds would be handed over to the Kalaguru Foundation, set up by Garg. The film has earned ₹32 crore, setting a new benchmark as the highest-grossing Assamese film to date.

Addressing developments related to Garg’s death, the chief minister said the state government would appoint a Special Public Prosecutor by January 12, following consultations with criminal law experts. The appointment is expected to be announced by January 6.

The government will also approach the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court to seek the constitution of a fast-track court to expedite the trial in the case. “The decision rests with the High Court, but we will make the request,” Sarma said.

Reflecting on the past year, the chief minister said 2025 had been deeply distressing for the people of Assam, noting that Garg’s death and the subsequent developments had profoundly shocked the state.
