Sheikh Hasina Calls for Unity, Warns Bangladesh Heading Toward “Darkness”
Jan 01, 2026
Former Bangladesh Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina has called on the people of Bangladesh to unite, accusing the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government of pushing the country toward “darkness” through corruption, falsehoods, and self-serving actions.
In a New Year message shared by the Awami League on social media, Hasina claimed that those conspiring to destabilize and destroy Bangladesh have now been exposed before the nation. She said Bangladesh has become a name associated with fear on the global stage, adding that the country no longer receives respect from the international community.
Hasina alleged that growing insecurity faced by foreign investors and donor agencies, along with chaotic conditions inside the country, has led to a collapse of the national economy. She further warned that Bangladesh’s distinct identity and the legacy of the 1971 Liberation War are being questioned under the current circumstances.
Highlighting her government’s efforts to secure Bangladesh a dignified place globally, Hasina said the achievements made over the years are now at risk. She urged citizens to remember that during past crises, people from all backgrounds—regardless of class, religion, language, or ethnicity—had come together to protect the nation and move forward toward a shared vision.
