13 Dead, 98 Injured as Passenger Train Derails in Southern Mexico

At least 13 people were killed and 98 others injured after a passenger train derailed on the Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in southern Mexico, authorities said. The derailment occurred on the Salina Cruz–Coatzacoalcos route, with the train carrying around 250 passengers at the time.

Of the injured, 36 remain hospitalized while the rest suffered minor injuries, and 139 passengers are reported out of danger.

The Mexican Navy deployed 360 personnel, ambulances, air support, vehicles, and a drone to assist with rescue operations. Authorities are investigating the cause of the accident.

President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her condolences, sending senior officials to the scene to oversee relief efforts and support victims and their families.

The train forms part of a major infrastructure initiative, the Interoceanic Corridor, aimed at improving connectivity between Mexico’s Pacific and Gulf coasts.
