Thailand, Cambodia Sign Ceasefire to End Border Clashes
Dec 27, 2025
Thailand and Cambodia have signed a ceasefire agreement aimed at halting fighting along their disputed border following weeks of escalating violence. The agreement was signed on Saturday at a border checkpoint in Thailand’s Chanthaburi province by Thai Defence Minister Natthapon Nakpanich and Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Tea Seiha.
The ceasefire was reached during a special meeting of the joint border committee of both countries. Fighting had intensified earlier this month after a previous ceasefire agreed in July collapsed.
The clashes involved artillery shelling, rocket fire, and air operations, particularly in areas near the Dangrek mountain range along the Thailand-Cambodia border. The dispute centres on long-contested border areas, including land surrounding the Preah Vihear temple. While the International Court of Justice ruled in 1962 that the temple belongs to Cambodia, claims over adjacent territory remain unresolved.
The recent violence resulted in military casualties and forced thousands of civilians to flee their homes on both sides of the border. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has urged both countries to exercise restraint and return to dialogue to restore peace and stability in the region.
