Electronics Emerges as India’s Third-Largest Export Sector: Vaishnaw

Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has said that electronics has emerged as India’s third-largest export category, rising from the seventh position in recent years. In a social media post, the Minister noted that India is now the world’s second-largest mobile phone manufacturing country.

Mr Vaishnaw said the growth of electronics manufacturing has been driven by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of building a strong and comprehensive manufacturing ecosystem. He highlighted that the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Large Scale Electronics Manufacturing has attracted investments of over ₹13,475 crore and achieved production worth ₹9.8 lakh crore, while generating more than 1.3 lakh jobs over the last five years.

The Minister said the government is now focusing on strengthening the electronics supply chain, including components, modules, raw materials and manufacturing equipment. He added that the Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme has received 249 applications involving investments of ₹1.15 lakh crore, expected production of ₹10.34 lakh crore and employment generation of 1.42 lakh jobs, marking the highest-ever investment commitment in the sector.

Mr Vaishnaw also said that ten semiconductor units have been approved so far, with three already in pilot or early production stages. He noted that electronics manufacturing has created 25 lakh jobs in the past decade and said job creation will accelerate further as semiconductor and component manufacturing scales up.
