Tarique Rahman Returns to Bangladesh after 17 Years
Dec 25, 2025
Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman returned to Dhaka on Thursday, ending nearly 17 years in exile in the United Kingdom. He arrived on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight from London, landing at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport around 11:40 am after a brief stop in Sylhet.
Tarique was accompanied by his wife, Dr. Zubaida Rahman, and daughter, Zaima Rahman. Senior BNP leaders, including Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, welcomed him at the VIP lounge, where he received an emotional reception.
Thousands of police and law enforcement officers were deployed at the airport, key routes, and surrounding areas for security. Tarique later attended a public gathering in Purbachal, addressing large crowds of supporters, before visiting Evercare Hospital to see his ailing mother and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, and then proceeding to his Gulshan residence.
Tarique had left Bangladesh in 2008 for medical treatment amid political turmoil. With all cases against him withdrawn following a change in government, his return marks a major political milestone for the BNP ahead of national elections.
