UN Warns Mob Violence and Media Attacks Escalating in Bangladesh

UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of expression Irene Khan has raised alarm over rising mob violence in Bangladesh, citing a climate of impunity that endangers journalists and artists. She condemned attacks on The Daily Star, Prothom Alo, the Chhayanaut cultural centre, and the editor of New Age during protests following Sharif Osman Hadi’s killing on December 18, 2024.

Khan said freedom of expression is under sustained assault from both state and non-state actors, with hundreds of journalists arrested on politically motivated charges since August 5, 2024, and several killed. She accused the interim government of failing to protect media and cultural freedom, allowing threats and violence to go unpunished.

Observers noted that Khan’s statement did not mention the recent mob lynching of Hindu youth Dipu Chandra Das in Mymensingh over blasphemy allegations.
