Bangladesh Buries Youth Activist Osman Hadi Amid Tight Security
Dec 20, 2025
Bangladesh remained tense on Saturday as thousands gathered in Dhaka for the funeral of youth activist and Inqilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi, whose killing has triggered fresh unrest across the country.
Hadi, a prominent figure in last year’s student-led movement against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, was shot dead by masked gunmen on December 12 while campaigning for the February 12 parliamentary elections in Dhaka’s Bijoynagar area. He was critically injured and later airlifted to Singapore for treatment, where he died on December 18.
Funeral prayers were held at Manik Mia Avenue, near the National Parliament, under heavy security. Authorities deployed large numbers of police and security forces as mourners poured in, reflecting fears of renewed violence following days of protests and clashes.
Following news of Hadi’s death, demonstrations erupted in Dhaka and other cities, with incidents of vandalism and arson reported. Protesters demanded justice and accused unnamed groups of orchestrating the killing, further straining the fragile calm under the interim government ahead of elections.
Hadi’s body was flown back to Dhaka on Friday evening and taken to Dhaka University Central Mosque before burial. At the request of his family, there was no public viewing. He was laid to rest near the grave of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam at Manik Mia Avenue.
