Rajdhani Express Ploughs Into Elephant Herd in Assam, Seven Jumbos Killed
Dec 20, 2025
Seven elephants were killed and one seriously injured after the Sairang–New Delhi Rajdhani Express rammed into a herd in Assam’s Hojai district early Saturday morning. The tragic accident occurred at around 2.17 am in Changjurai village, about 126 km from Guwahati.
The impact derailed the train’s engine and five coaches, though railway officials confirmed that no passengers were injured. Forest authorities suspect dense fog in the area may have reduced visibility, contributing to the collision.
Nagaon Divisional Forest Officer Suhash Kadam said the incident is under investigation, while Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) chief spokesperson Kapinjal Kishore Sharma stated that the mishap occurred in the Jamunamukh–Kampur section under the Lumding division. He added that the site is not a designated elephant corridor.
Accident relief trains and senior railway officials rushed to the spot soon after the incident. The Rajdhani Express connects Sairang near Aizawl in Mizoram with Anand Vihar Terminal in New Delhi.
