Winter Session of Parliament Concludes with High Productivity

The 19-day Winter Session of Parliament concluded on Friday with both Houses adjourned sine die. The Lok Sabha was adjourned first, followed by the Rajya Sabha.

In his valedictory address, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said the House recorded a productivity of around 111 per cent during the session, which comprised 15 sittings. He thanked members for their cooperation in ensuring the smooth conduct of proceedings.

Rajya Sabha Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan said the Upper House functioned for nearly 92 hours and achieved a productivity of 121 per cent. He noted that 59 private members’ bills were introduced during the session and highlighted the high quality of debates on matters of historical and democratic importance.

The Rajya Sabha held a special discussion marking the 150th anniversary of the national song Vande Mataram, with 82 members participating. A separate discussion on election reforms saw contributions from 57 members aimed at strengthening the country’s democratic process.

However, Mr. Radhakrishnan expressed concern over disruptions during the final sitting, citing slogan-shouting, display of placards, and obstruction of ministerial replies. He described such conduct as unbecoming of Members of Parliament and urged members to introspect and avoid similar behaviour in the future.
