Violence Hits Dhaka After Death of Student Leader Osman Hadi

Dhaka was rocked by fresh violence in the early hours of Friday after the death of student leader and Inqilab Mancha convenor Sharif Osman Hadi, with attackers vandalising and partially setting fire to the premises of the renowned cultural institution Chhayanaut.

The incident occurred between 1:30 am and 2:00 am at Chhayanaut Sanskriti Bhawan in the capital’s Dhanmondi area. According to witnesses, a group of unidentified individuals forcibly entered the building, smashed furniture and musical instruments, and set fire to items inside the premises as well as on the road outside.

Police said the attackers vandalised the building and ignited fires using scraps. Fire service personnel later arrived at the scene and brought the blaze under control.

Witnesses reported that several assailants wore helmets and face coverings to conceal their identities and were heard chanting religious slogans, including “Naraye Takbir,” during the attack. As tensions escalated, members of the Bangladesh Army and police were deployed to disperse the crowd and restore order in the area.

Chhayanaut, founded in 1961, is one of Bangladesh’s most prominent cultural organisations and is widely known for its role in promoting Bengali music, heritage and traditions. The attack has raised serious concerns about the safety of cultural and public institutions amid the ongoing unrest following Osman Hadi’s death.
