Dec 18, 2025
The 34th edition of the Agartala Book Fair is set to begin on January 2 at the Hapania International Fair Ground. In preparation for the event, an extended meeting of the Book Fair Steering Committee was held on Thursday at the Agartala Municipal Corporation conference hall.
The meeting reviewed the overall progress of preparations, organisational arrangements, and possible new additions to this year’s fair. Discussions also focused on improving facilities for visitors and publishers.
Mayor Dipak Majumder, Deputy Mayor Monika Das Dutta, Vice Chairman of the State Cultural Development Committee Sabuj Chakraborty, directors and officials from concerned departments, conveners of various sub-committees, and representatives from multiple government departments were present in the meeting.
During the meeting, the committee assessed how far preparations had progressed and exchanged views on potential changes and new initiatives to enhance the fair. The fair’s operating hours were also discussed. Although publishers and booksellers suggested starting the fair earlier in the day, the committee decided to continue with the existing schedule—from 1:00 PM to 8:30 PM.
Addressing the media after the meeting, Mayor Dipak Majumder said that the steering committee was largely satisfied with the preparations, which are now in the final stages. He added that the fair is being organised based on the experience of those who have been associated with it for many years. Further meetings of the sub-committees or the steering committee may be convened if required.
The Mayor also informed that proposals had been made to invite renowned writers and artists from outside the state. As this involves government-level decisions, the matter will be discussed with the Chief Minister before taking a final call. Decisions have also been taken regarding the theme pavilion, decoration of stalls, nameplates of officials, and the overall design and layout of the fair.
Highlighting the importance of the event, Mayor Majumder said the Agartala Book Fair is a traditional and popular cultural festival of the state. Each year, the fair introduces new elements. Apart from book sales, cultural programmes, poetry sessions, seminars, quiz competitions, and various student-oriented activities make the fair more attractive to visitors.
