Security Tightened in Dhaka as Police Block Protest March to Indian High Commission
Dec 18, 2025
Security was heightened across Dhaka’s diplomatic zone on Wednesday after police blocked a march organized by a group called July Oikya, which had planned to proceed to the Indian High Commission in Gulshan.
Thousands of protesters gathered near Rampura Bridge around 3:15 pm, raising slogans and demanding the return of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and other Awami League leaders who fled to India following last year’s July uprising.
As the march reached Uttar Badda around 4:00 pm, police set up barricades to stop the procession. Protesters briefly broke through the first blockade but were halted again by heavier security. They later staged a sit-in on the road, chanting slogans and addressing the crowd via loudspeakers. The incident has raised questions about the alertness of the country’s security and intelligence system.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police said officers from the Gulshan Division and the Diplomatic Security Division were deployed at key locations, including Rampura Bridge and Gulshan-1, to maintain public order and protect diplomatic missions.
In response, India summoned Bangladesh’s High Commissioner in New Delhi, Riaz Hamidullah, to express strong concern over the security situation in Bangladesh, particularly threats surrounding the Indian High Commission.
The Ministry of External Affairs of India stated that it “completely rejects the false narrative” being promoted by extremist elements regarding recent events in Bangladesh. It expressed regret that the interim government had neither conducted a thorough investigation nor shared meaningful evidence. India reiterated its support for peace, stability, and free, fair, and inclusive elections in Bangladesh, while urging authorities to take measures that prevent any threat to diplomatic premises.
