PM Modi Says Global South Is Shaping Its Own Future

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said that the Global South is writing its own destiny, as he addressed a joint session of Ethiopia’s Parliament in Addis Ababa. He said India and Ethiopia share a common vision of a more just, equal and peaceful world, where the Global South rises not against anyone, but for everyone.

Highlighting the long-standing ties between the two ancient civilisations, the Prime Minister said solidarity and cooperation have strengthened relations between India and Ethiopia, especially over the past eleven years. He also called for reforms in global governance, stressing that international decision-making systems must reflect present-day realities and cannot remain rooted in the world of 1945.

Before addressing the Parliament, Prime Minister Modi laid a wreath at the Adwa Victory Monument. During the visit, India and Ethiopia elevated their bilateral ties to a Strategic Partnership following wide-ranging talks between Prime Minister Modi and his Ethiopian counterpart, Abiy Ahmed Ali.

The two leaders discussed issues of mutual and global interest and witnessed the signing of eight MoUs and agreements. These include cooperation in customs, UN peacekeeping training, debt restructuring under the G20 framework, setting up a data centre at Ethiopia’s Foreign Ministry, increasing ICCR scholarships, and offering short-term AI courses for Ethiopian students.

Prime Minister Modi was also conferred Ethiopia’s highest civilian award, The Great Honour Nishan of Ethiopia. He later departed for Oman, the final leg of his three-nation tour.
