Marking the historic Vijay Diwas, Tripura Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu on Tuesday paid heartfelt tributes to the martyrs of the Indian Armed Forces at the Albert Ekka War Memorial in Lichu Bagan, Agartala.
The Governor took part in a solemn wreath-laying ceremony, honouring the brave soldiers who laid down their lives during the 1971 Indo-Pak war that led to the liberation of Bangladesh.
Addressing the media after the ceremony, Governor Reddy recalled the humanitarian and military role played by India during the Bangladesh Liberation War. He said that large numbers of refugees had crossed into India from the then East Pakistan, prompting the Indira Gandhi-led government to extend support. India later stood firmly alongside the Mukti Vahini, and the Indian Armed Forces actively participated in the conflict.
The Governor highlighted that the war reached a historic conclusion on December 16, 1971, when around 91,000 Pakistani soldiers surrendered before the Indian Army. “This momentous victory is commemorated every year as Vijay Diwas,” he said.
Governor Reddy also paid special tribute to Lance Naik Albert Ekka, whose bravery played a crucial role in protecting Agartala during the war. In recognition of his extraordinary valour, Albert Ekka was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest gallantry award, in 2000. The war memorial in Agartala has been named in his honour.
On the occasion, the Governor extended his warm greetings to the people of Tripura and citizens across the country, urging everyone to remember the sacrifices of the nation’s soldiers and uphold the values they fought for.
